Woodcut

image

I was in NYC over the weekend checking out some of the galleries on West 24th and 25th St. with my Bro-in-law and fellow artist Perry Yung, we started talking about woodcut printing, and I decided to try it out when I got back to the studio, here are a few (Flickr) including mixed-media.

Mini Simmons by Paul Pedro

image

My good friend Paul Pedro local Little Compton, RI surfer/ shaper who has been making boards for years just finished up this Mini Simmons style small wave board, here it is in the shaping room ready for glassing, I’m going to be working up the logos for this deck, can’t wait to try it out on a small glassy day!

Secret Spot Map

image

Finished up this painting last night, it’s encaustic and mixed media on re-claimed baltic maple wood panel. I used imagery of an old Rhode Island map and a photo I took this Winter of one of my favorite “secret” surf spots up here in RI. I’ve been planning on working more maps into my layouts and this seems to go well with this painting, map image is layered into the upper panel.  Encaustic is sometime challenging to photograph because of the transparent quality of the wax, people always tell me that my stuff looks way better person!

Winter surf in New England

image

I shot this before a session back in Feb, and recently re-discovered it on one of my Flash cards, it’s cool when you find an old photo you forgot about, this was a cold day, but the waves were fun and uncrowded. I use a 6mm Oneill wetsuit, and 7mm booties, the water temp is around 37 and yes it is still very cold with a suit on, you can last about one hour before you really start to feel it in your hands and feet first.

JC Hawaii TRD small wave board

image

Had a chance to hang out with Chuck and Ana over at Living Water Surf Co. in Little Compton, RI, cool small shop with great products and everything you need to get wet!

They have the new JC Hawaii TRD model, I’m looking into getting a short and stubby board “Kelly Slater inspired” for those small days, and after seeing this model I really like the way it looked! This one here has a round or “thumb” tail which I think would work well out here in the NEast, John Carper is shaping some nice boards right now! and the glassing looked solid as well, check out Shane Dorian (youtube) on one in Ecuador!

Winter Surfing in Rhode Island

Winter surfing Rhode Island from dgonville on Vimeo.

My brother in-law Brad Martin made this video of me and Don Lemay Winter surfing in Rhode Island back in 07, I remember this day was very cold with a wind chill of zero, the waves were small but fun!

New at the Sunnyside

image

I have a new painting at the Sunnyside, in Warren RI (on the water, behind Tavenos). My sister and I display our art there and will be switching up our art thru out the summer, lot’s of people visit the popular Breakfast and Lunch spot, it has the best food in town! the owner is the famous chief Joe Samone, thanks Joe. measures 17x20, mixed media including wax, and photo transfers on reclaimed wood. Looks way better in person so go check it out at Lunch!
